What If It's Already Happening?

What if the transformation we are waiting for has already begun?
The world often measures growth through speed, productivity, visible progress, and immediate results.
The Spirit rarely does.
Some of the deepest changes in our lives begin quietly, beneath the surface, long before we can name or see them.
In this week’s Gathering of Compassionate Souls, Rev. Deb reflects on Jesus’ Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds and Paul’s image of creation longing for something new to be born.
Together, these teachings invite us to trust, recognize, and engage with what Love may already be growing.
Seeds That Are Already Growing
Last week, guest messenger Darlene Saeva explored Jesus’ Parable of the Sower and reminded us that spiritual growth begins by preparing the soil of our lives.
This week, Jesus tells another story about seeds.
But these seeds are no longer waiting to be planted.
They are already growing.
Wheat and weeds appear together in the same field. The workers immediately want to pull out what seems wrong, unwanted, or harmful.
The farmer tells them to wait.
Pulling too soon may destroy the wheat along with the weeds.
Our Instinct to Fix Everything
The workers’ response is deeply human.
When we see something that appears out of place, our instinct is often to remove it, fix it, control it, or separate it.
We want the field to become neat and certain again.
Yet Jesus’ story asks us to consider whether we always understand what is growing while the field is still young.
For generations, people have asked, “Who are the weeds?”
Perhaps the deeper question is:
What kind of growers are we becoming?
What If Something New Is Being Born?
In his letter to the Romans, Paul describes all creation as groaning in labor, waiting for something new to be born.
That image feels especially meaningful in a time of profound cultural, spiritual, and social change.
Old systems are being questioned.
Long-held assumptions are shifting.
People around the world are reconsidering what it means to belong, what it means to be human, and what kind of future we want to create together.
Some days, it feels as though everything is falling apart.
Paul offers another possibility.
What if something new is struggling to be born?
Growth Beneath the Surface
A garden in early spring rarely looks impressive.
Tiny shoots may appear almost unnoticed.
Beneath the surface, roots spread long before leaves become visible.
Life is already at work, even when there is very little evidence above the ground.
Perhaps the same is true for us.
Perhaps it is also true for humanity.
We may only be at the tiny-shoots stage of transformation.
Beneath our personal lives and beneath the life of the world, roots may already be spreading, connecting, and strengthening what will one day become visible.
Love Works Organically
Growth takes time.
Not because Love is absent.
Not because Light has disappeared.
But because Love and Light often work organically.
Quietly.
Patiently.
From the inside out.
That understanding changes the questions we ask.
Instead of asking, “How do we make growth happen?” we might ask:
How do we trust what is already growing?
How do we recognize the signs of life when they still seem small?
How do we engage with that growth in ways that nurture it?
Creating Conditions for Growth
Spiritual traditions offer many practices that help create conditions where growth can flourish.
Prayer.
Silence.
Compassion.
Forgiveness.
Generosity.
Rest.
Community.
None of these practices forces a seed to grow.
They help create an environment where life can take root.
Participating in What Love Is Growing
The same is true in the world around us.
Every act of kindness strengthens compassion.
Every act of courage makes fear a little smaller.
Every choice to build a bridge rather than a wall becomes part of humanity’s unfolding story.
Perhaps spiritual growth has never been only about becoming better individuals.
Perhaps it has always been about participating in the ongoing creation of a more compassionate world.
Hope Trusts What Cannot Yet Be Seen
Jesus reminds us that we cannot always recognize what is growing while the field is still young.
Paul reminds us that hope trusts what cannot yet be seen.
And the wisdom reflected in Psalm 139 assures us that through every uncertainty and every stage of becoming, we are not alone.
We are known.
We are held.
Love is nearer than our next breath.
What If It Is Already Happening?
This week, instead of asking whether enough is changing, perhaps we can notice where life is already emerging.
Within us.
Among us.
Throughout our world.
Where is compassion quietly taking root?
Where is courage beginning to rise?
Where is someone choosing connection instead of division?
Where is hope growing before anyone has noticed?
May we go with hearts that trust, eyes that recognize, and hands ready to engage with what Love is already bringing to life.
May peace go with us.
May hope grow within us.
And may Love continue its quiet work through us.
